Clinical Medical Assistant

COURSE LENGTH : 18 weeks  HOURS : 180

Medical Assistants are professionals in healthcare who support physicians and other mid-level practitioners, including Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. Medical Assistant performs routine clinical and administrative duties under the direct supervision of a physician or other health care professionals. Administrative duties include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating, filing, and maintaining patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, managing correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and coding.

Students who choose to become medical assistants will be required to take the following courses and their corresponding clinical as pre-requisites to be eligible to take the NHA exam for CMA at CHTC Students will have an unpaid externship at a local hospital or doctor’s office.

The program framework is modeled to provide students with stackable credentialed certifications. Students are encouraged to obtain certification immediately following the completion of each pre-requisite course while progressing in the program. Students interested in enrolling in the program must be 17 years with a high school diploma or GED.

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Take detailed medical history.

  • Assess and record vital signs.

  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens.

  • Prepare and administer medications as directed.

  • Telephone prescriptions to pharmacy.

  • ​Authorize prescription refills as directed.

  • Prepare patients for X-rays.

  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs)

  • Remove sutures and change dressings.
